MyCompLab: "A Powerful Teaching Tool"

Watch a YouTube video that Professor Edwin Neagle from Wake Tech Community College created to show his English department the power of MyCompLab!

In this video, Professor Neagle walks his department through some basic features of MyCompLab. He sets up an assignment (Instructor view) and submits an assignment (Student view). He then grades and comments on an assignment, inserts comments on standard errors and records an audio comment (Instructor view). Finally, Professor Neagle shows the resources available to students on MyCompLab. Says Professor Neagle, "MyCompLab allows us to create an individualized course of study for our students."

"Students genuinely feel that using MyCompLab has benefitted and strengthened their writing effectiveness. Most students grumble at the mere mention of "grammar," yet after using MyCompLab, my students have told me that, "Grammar is fun!" I think this realization stems from their being able to work on grammar and usage exercises at their own pace, using technology they are familiar with, and being able to target their weaknesses and gain control over them. That is fun!"
— Deborah Scaggs, Writing Program Director and Assistant Professor of English, Texas A&M International University

"MyCompLab is the most comprehensive program that I have found when it comes to composition (writing, peer review, revision, grading, tutoring), grammar (individual study plans and exercises), assignments (a full array of multimedia resources and materials), and ease of use. After using it consistently for two years, I still feel that I have just begun to explore the vast array of resources available to me in one place."
— Dr. Natasha Whitton, Southeastern Louisiana University, MyCompLab with a MLL integration

"I love the tools MyCompLab gives me. My students need help with the mechanics of writing, and I appreciate how MyCompLab lets me tailor skills assignments to their needs. Another big benefit for me is the ability to provide audio responses to my students' drafts. I can react to their writing more personally and bring a much more positive pedagogy to my responses compared to the typical extensive—and generally unread—end comments. My students, of course, love the ability to get their feedback nearly immediately."
— Kevin Scott, Assistant Professor, Coordinator of English Education, Albany State University

"MyCompLab lets my students focus on the specific topics on which they need to work. This personalized approach also lets them take charge of their own learning, giving them meaningful ownership over those exercises and lessons."
— Michelle Blake, Adjunct Professor, West Chester University

"Pearson has streamlined the registration process so students can get online with ease. The interface on MyCompLab is familiar and friendly and students immediately gain a comfort level with the exercises and composition space. They value the opportunity to work at their own pace, on their own time, and still receive immediate and helpful feedback. MyCompLab allows instructors to use class time more productively while not sacrificing attention to student development of essential skills."
— John Miller, Adjunct Professor, Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana

"As a result of pre-diagnostic tests, MyCompLab helps students understand where their weaknesses are and specifically remediates them in those areas. Students prefer to have customized work rather than to suffer through remediation on concepts that they have mastered. In addition, MyCompLab is done mostly outside of class and is graded by the computer, which frees the instructor to use the time in more productive ways. Finally, I think the digital format is appealing and comfortable to our students."
— Sandra Westmoreland, Assistant Professor, Texas Woman's University

"MyCompLab has had enormous impact on our writing program as a whole. It has allowed us to meet e-media needs and produce new learning and technology styles in teaching."
— Kami Hancock, Graduate Coordinator, Saint Louis University

"MyCompLab has allowed me to move classes into an online environment by eliminating repetitive drudge work and allowing students the freedom to practice and learn skills at their convenience. It has enhanced my classes by allowing me to focus on writing process with the support of MyCompLab tools."
— Jude Ryan, English Professor, Polk State College

"The biggest benefit of MyCompLab is that it customizes remediation for my students through the diagnostics and the links created when I respond to student papers."
— Susan Achziger, Professor, Community College of Aurora

"MyCompLab is a great place to organize assignments and provide specific feedback."
— Anthony Nappi, Instructor of English, St. Petersburg College

"I have noticed a tremendous improvement in the level of the peer reviews my students write since I have moved it out of the face-to-face classroom and into MyCompLab. Student comments are much more insightful and constructive than the ones they make in person."
— Kimberly Hall, Assistant Professor, Harrisburg Area Community College

"MyCompLab has allowed students to complete customized grammar units rather than having to cover all the grammar as a class. This prevents students from losing interest in topics they already know while allowing them to more efficiently use their time on areas they need."
— Michelle Jarvis, Instructor, Davidson County Community College

"As an instructor, I'm elated with the ease of using MyCompLab, from creating assignments to organizing a class online. For students, MyCompLab offers an integrated learning environment that places everything they need to compose at their fingertips."
— Bill Endres, University of Arizona (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"MyCompLab offers an integrated environment that is designed to help us teach and learn better. Up until now we use a little piece from here and a little piece from there and each little piece we add takes time and adds to the overall confusion factor. The fact that everything is integrated and sensible is wonderful."
— Eric Hoffman , Northern Illinois University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"MyCompLab provides all the tools you need under one roof. It enables you to do what you already do, but save time. I love that the composing spaces allows you to have all your students' papers in one place and that comments can be tied to resources. Students often have trouble understanding instructor comments on their papers, but if you can link students to resources related to that comment, they have an easier time understanding."
— Rob Lee, Pasadena City College

"I am most excited about the composing space. The ability for students AND teachers to create and review documents, as well as keep track of grades, in the same space and with the same application, is a truly dynamic and unique 'feature' of MyCompLab. However, I am also very excited about the portfolio feature--one, again, that other applications do not include."
— Kelly Martin, Collin County Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"I'm most excited about the use of e-portfolio in MyCompLab. First Year Composition is being pushed from all sides to adopt outcomes assessment, and e-portfolios have long been the best method to balance the needs of students, teachers, and administrators in developing outcomes which make sense for classroom needs. By incorporating e-portfolios in to MyCompLab, Pearson is ensuring a lot flexibility for departments looking to survive and even thrive in the coming assessment wars."
— Bob Cummings, Columbus State University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"MyCompLab is an easy, engaging way to deliver more interactive and up-to-date teaching. I am very interested in the portfolio section, and I especially like the peer review. The composing space is a great tool in helping students become better writers."
— Susan Perry, Greenville Technical College

"This new MyCompLab is extremely accessible and everything you need is in one place."
— Julia Bleakney, Saddleback College

"I'm most excited about the features that directly support the writing process. Reference documents and testing spaces are important, but there are a lot of products out there meant to do that. We need more environments that provide instruction directly in the spaces in which composing happens. This, to me, is what's exciting about MyCompLab: the relatively tight integration of composing and instruction on composing."
— Stuart Selber, Penn State University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"MyCompLab is a very helpful addition to teaching composition online or in the classroom. Enabling students to click on links to get answers to questions about composition accomodates the way today's students think."
— Mary Anne Nagler, Oakland Community College

"With the new MyCompLab we have the opportunity to give students individualized help because we can link them to exercises from within their own papers in the composing space. I also like its simplicity and design – it looks easy to use."
— Jan Laville, Des Moines Area Community College

"I like that students can see feedback on their writing from multiple audiences at once—their instructor, fellow students, etc."
— Liz Rohan, University of Michigan – Dearborn

"MyCompLab will enable instructors to easily and directly connect students to resources about their writing. The peer review features look strong."
— Scott Warnock, Drexel University

"I would describe the new MyCompLab as a program that helps instructors organize their classes. More importantly, it helps students know exactly what is going on and gives them ways to get help – they can find resources and take charge of their learning. Also, it seems like an easy-to-use program. I think it would be especially good for instructors who aren't tech savvy – everything is right there and spelled out."
— Michelle Krueger , Central Michigan University

"I love the portfolio feature and the ability to share portfolios with outside readers. I also like that MyCompLab enables you to compile instructor, peer and tutor feedback in one space. MyCompLab is an online tool that connects the major components of the composing process: research, drafting, feedback, and tools for editing."
— Keri Dutkiewicz, Davenport University

"MyCompLab is a dynamic electronic space where students can create and share texts, get and give feedback, collaborate on a piece of writing, and create/revise a portfolio to bring with them to other courses."
— Liz Canfield , Virginia Commonwealth University (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"I like the idea of sharing a common space for composition, peer and instructor response. If fully realized, the new MyCompLab promises to provide a 'lingua franca' for members of a composition class community, resolving the compatibility problems that plague current course management systems.
— Miles McCrimmon, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)

"I like that MyCompLab will enable me to keep track of student writing online rather than with lots of papers in folders. It will help students keep track of their work too."
— Marti Singer , Georgia State University

"My favorite parts of the new MyCompLab are the Writer's Toolkit and To Do list. I'd say MyCompLab is a great facilitator – part course management, part online evaluation program. It makes a much better virtual writing classroom than WebCT."
— Susan J. Miller, Santa Fe Community College

"MyCompLab uses the latest technology to aid in teaching and managing a composition course."
— Jose Flores, Austin Community College (MyCompLab Advisory Board Member)
